Geek TV reviews, recaps and more!
You heard that right: Cary Elwes wrote a book about The Princess Bride! And it comes out TOMORROW!
The book is called As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride.
As You Wish recounts the wonderful experiences of the cast and crew while making the 1987 film The Princess Bride. Cary interviewed friends and co-stars Billy Crystal, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin–all who share stories and memories of this beloved film.
I was so excited when I first heard the news because I absolutely *adore* this movie! To me, it is the most enchanting, charming, and adventurous tale of love and friendship I have ever seen on screen. I used to watch it whenever I was sick, just like Fred Savage’s character in the film. Cary Elwes character, Westley, was actually my first movie crush. Westley, the farm boy, who was “poor, poor and perfect.” Come to think of it, my first tv/movie crushes in life were both named Westley: Westley from The Princess Bride, and Wesley Crusher, from Star Trek: The Next Generation. (No wonder I have a thing for nerdy swashbucklers ;))
Not only did I love this film growing up, but I also loved the book! I read the paperback at some point in college, and I couldn’t put it down! Screenwriter William Goldman (All the President’s Men, Chaplin) wrote The Princess Bride in 1973 as an abriged version of the real book, written by a fictitoius author, S. Morgenstern. The book tells the story of Buttercup and her Westley, but it also includes author commentary about the original, unabridged version. The story was so wonderfully told through the lens of fake author exposition–it’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever read!
In an interview with Marvel TV at New York Comic Con this weekend, Cary shared that The Princess Bride is the “gift that keeps on giving” as it has only grown in popularity since it’s release over 25 years ago. I’m so glad to see that this book will be another gift to the fans–so thank you Cary!
You can check out Cary’s NYCC interview with Marvel HERE and you can order a copy of this new book HERE. You can also get it on audiobook, which is read by Cary, Christopher Guest, Carol Kane, Wallace Shawn & more.
Will you be checking this book out, or is the idea of it simply just too “inconceivable?” 😉
