Star Wars Casting: The Who’s Who of the Episode VII Universe

That’s right folks, we’re going back to a galaxy far, far away!

Last week the Hoth ice melted and the Star Wars Episode VII cast was announced!

The announcement was paired with an iconic photo – a photo that could be mistaken for an original Star Wars set pic from the ’70s. A black and white photo of the cast, sitting in a make-shift read through room, somewhere on the Pinewood Studios lot in England (or so I am assuming.) Crates that looked like they came from the vault of Indiana Jones surrounded them, and an unboxed R2-D2 looked on. This photo and the news spread and soon the internet was brimming with the casting announcement.

So, who exactly is in the new Star Wars film?

Let me soothe your soul by saying that Han, Luke, Leia, Chewie, R2-D2 & C3P0 are all back for this one~

Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, and Anthony Daniels will all be reprising their original roles from Episodes IV, V, & VI!

Joining them is a unique group of individuals. Some known, and some unknown. Let’s take a look at the new cast:

First is Oscar Isaac. Oscar is one of my favorite actors. I first saw him in Body of Lies with Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe. He had a supporting role, but he captivated me. He then appeared with Russell again in Robin Hood. He played a very narcissistic Prince John. He was wicked and he was very good at it. He recently starred in the Oscar nominated “Inside Llewyn Davis.”

Second is Andy Serkis. Some may remember him from the iconic Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies, playing a certain “precious” creature named Gollum. The speculation is that he will be doing the voice and performance-motion capture for one of many CG roles.

Next is Max Von Sydow. Even if you are unfamiliar with his name you will recognize his face and voice. He has been in so many films, from What Dreams May Come, to Dune, from Minority Report to Robin Hood. A classic actor with an incredible voice. I will be surprised if he is not playing a Sith Master.

Next is Adam Driver. Adam was also in “Inside Llewyn Davis”. He recently scored an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor in HBO’s “Girls”. Adam’s casting announcement was the first verified rumor, which started circulating about a month ago. He is speculated to be playing a Sith apprentice.

Next is Domhnall Gleeson. You may remember Dom as Ron Weasley’s older brother Bill in the Harry Potter film series. He recently starred as the young time-traveler with Rachel McAdams in “About Time”. No word yet which character he might be playing in Star Wars.

Next is John Boyega. Interesting factoid, you can catch John in the return of Jack Bauer! John will appear in 24: Live Another Day. As for any speculation about what role he playing, he could be playing a new character, or someone related to Lando. Fingers crossed that Lando settled down after destroying the Death Star 2.0.

Lastly is Daisy Ridley. Daisy is speculated to be playing the daughter of Han Solo and Princess Leia. You can see Daisy in a handful of British television shows such as Casualty, Silent Witness, and Mr. Selfridge.

What do you think about the casting news? Are you excited to see the return of the original cast? Do you have any thoughts on the new storyline?

I wish we would just bring Lando back period. I hope John’s a Jedi though!
